Thu, 29 Mar 2012 02:41:50 -0700 Northern Lights- Mass Participatory Documentary Project http://stuarthepburn.net/northern-lights-mass-participatory-documentar http://stuarthepburn.net/northern-lights-mass-participatory-documentar

Northern Lights, the mass participatory film project launched today.

N

ew and experienced film-makers are invited to submit videos of
their experience of Scotland. Anyone is eligible to submit as many
videos as they like - the only restriction is that the footage must be
shot in, or be about, Scotland. The footage will be edited into a
feature film by director Nick Higgins, and then toured around Scotland
and screened within the communities who made the footage. The period
for submitting videos is now until 21st June and so we want to tell as
many people about it as possible. There will be cash awards along the
way for the best videos and we're encouraging people to run their own
DIY workshops.

It would be great if you could help by:
- following us on twitter and also tweeting to your followers about
the project: www.twitter.com/weRNLights
- liking us on facebook and sharing our call to action video to your
profile: http://www.facebook.com/WeAreNorthernLights
- We would love it if you could write about the project on on your
blog and/or enewsletter.

If you're posting something on your website, you could also
embed the call to action video, which is here: http://bit.ly/GY3oFB

I would really appreciate it if you could help spread the word about
this opportunity, and hope that we can run some workshops attached to
Citizen Relay events. Thanks for your help

Kind regards
Rebecca

Tue, 20 Mar 2012 16:59:00 -0700 George Orwell's 6 Rules For Writers http://stuarthepburn.net/george-orwells-6-rules-for-weiters http://stuarthepburn.net/george-orwells-6-rules-for-weiters

George Orwell’s 6 rules for writers

In 1946, George Orwell laid out his theories on writing in an essay titled “Politics and the English Language.” Orwell criticized the use of complicated language and promoted clear, simple prose whenever possible. The essay concluded with six rules summarizing Orwell’s opinion.

  1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or other figure of speech which you are used to seeing in print.
  2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
  3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
  4. Never use the passive where you can use the active.
  5. Never use a foreign phrase, a scientific word, or a jargon word if you can think of an everyday English equivalent.
  6. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.

rock n roll royalty mary jean lewis belts out great balls of fire ... | http://www.jiveaces.com/News...

Saturday 3rd of March at Woodend Bowling and Tennis Club Mary Jean Lewis (neice of Jerry Lee Lewis) with her Low Men and Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie

Doors 8.00

Tickets £10

A great night of music coming up with Mary Jean Lewis and Her Low Men. Mary Jean is part of a musical legacy that started back in the fifties with her uncle, Jerry Lee. She's an absolute star exuding all the charm you would expect from a Louisiana woman. She draws on a range of country, blues, and rock n roll to create her own soulful style based on her powerful voice and intimate connection with the lyrics.

Mary Jean Lewis with her band, the Low Men are making quite a name for themselves on the Roots music scene playing a mixture of country, pop, rockabilly and rock n roll. This night in March promises to be an intimate occasion as she takes us on a journey through American roots music accompanied by Martin Barrett (guitar), JT Davidson (pedal steel) and Sy McBain (doghouse bass).

Also playing this night is Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie, as recommended by John Miller. Working with various Roots band line-ups since the late seventies - Des Horsfall has had, in his own words - “a few skirmishes with fame”. In the eighties he fronted Blues-Rock band ‘Raw Deal’ that was managed by Alexis Korner. In the nineteen nineties he was to be seen in hit videos on CMT and as opening act for Joe Ely, Steve Earle and many others. After a decade of studio work at his own analogue recording facility Valve Studios, Horsfall has re-emerged with a brand new ‘Rustic Rock n Roll’ outfit ‘Des Horsfall’s Kuschty Rye’  and a critically acclaimed (Ronnie Lane inspired) album ‘The Good Gentleman’s Tonic’ - the first in a trilogy mirroring Lane’s Slim Chance releases. http://www.kuschtyrye.net

Thu, 02 Feb 2012 09:53:43 -0800 GEN UP Scotland - A Unique Training Programme for emerging digital creatives http://stuarthepburn.net/gen-up-scotland-a-unique-training-programme-f-77785 http://stuarthepburn.net/gen-up-scotland-a-unique-training-programme-f-77785
We will be opening for applications for the next Gen Up Programme in the March (Gen Up you might remember is fully funded, intensive, industry-led training scheme for young digital talent that we run in partnership with Channel4 and the BBC)

We’d like to make sure this reaches the right people within UWS so that they can distribute it to appropriate students on their digital courses (digital arts & design, visual communication, digital media, games, animation, interactive media etc.).

I’d appreciate if you could distribute this ‘heads up’ to your colleagues and/or students you think would be interested.

Best wishes and many thanks in advance,

Marie-Claire

GEN UP Scotland
A unique and transformative training programme
for emerging digital creatives

Over five weeks, eight participants will have great access to leading practitioners and learn what it’s really like to work in the digital media industry.  This fully funded programme also includes immersion weeks at Channel 4 and BBC Scotland, plus a week as an intern at a Scottish digital media company.

Our most recent group on Gen Up described it variously as:
totally amazing”, “eye-opening...a wonderfully beneficial & brilliant course” and “better than getting Oscar-nominated”. One said it “changed my destiny”.

Places will be highly competitive but if you are a graduate, or new to the industry, with a talent for creating digital content, we would like to hear from you.

We will be open for applications later in the spring and the programme will take place in early summer. If you want to stay in touch and be notified when applications open, then click on the button below to register your interest.

Wed, 01 Feb 2012 08:49:01 -0800 A Mu's Game Screening at CCA Feb. 13th http://stuarthepburn.net/a-mus-game-screening-at-cca-feb-13th http://stuarthepburn.net/a-mus-game-screening-at-cca-feb-13th
Have you ever thought what 'A Mug's Game' meant?

The Screening of the new feature film 'A Mug's Game' on the 13th January 2012 was a great success with over 100 people attending.

'A Mug's Game' is regarded as the most significant Scottish film in recent years.

Scottish Screenwriters are hosting an additional screening of the film on Monday the 13th February at the CCA, 350 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow at 18:30.  There will be a Q&A afterwards.

Here's a link to the trailer and the website:

The background to the film is the Irish Catholics in a Scotland.  However, it reflects on the British Empire, the Reformation, John Knox and Scotland's relationship with England and Ireland.

While acknowledging Scotland's 'secret' shame is does not dwell on the past.  The film always looks forward to a Utopian Scottish society.  That could be as an independent country or as part of the United Kingdom.  It is a film that should interest everyone interested in Scottish/Irish culture and identity

Best Wishes
