Sounds In The Suburbs 1st Gig of 2012

- Mary Jean Lewis and Des Horsfall, what a cracker!!

rock n roll royalty mary jean lewis belts out great balls of fire ... | http://www.jiveaces.com/News...

Saturday 3rd of March at Woodend Bowling and Tennis Club Mary Jean Lewis (neice of Jerry Lee Lewis) with her Low Men and Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie

Doors 8.00

Tickets £10

A great night of music coming up with Mary Jean Lewis and Her Low Men. Mary Jean is part of a musical legacy that started back in the fifties with her uncle, Jerry Lee. She's an absolute star exuding all the charm you would expect from a Louisiana woman. She draws on a range of country, blues, and rock n roll to create her own soulful style based on her powerful voice and intimate connection with the lyrics.

Mary Jean Lewis with her band, the Low Men are making quite a name for themselves on the Roots music scene playing a mixture of country, pop, rockabilly and rock n roll. This night in March promises to be an intimate occasion as she takes us on a journey through American roots music accompanied by Martin Barrett (guitar), JT Davidson (pedal steel) and Sy McBain (doghouse bass).

Also playing this night is Des Horsfall and Andy McKerlie, as recommended by John Miller. Working with various Roots band line-ups since the late seventies - Des Horsfall has had, in his own words - “a few skirmishes with fame”. In the eighties he fronted Blues-Rock band ‘Raw Deal’ that was managed by Alexis Korner. In the nineteen nineties he was to be seen in hit videos on CMT and as opening act for Joe Ely, Steve Earle and many others. After a decade of studio work at his own analogue recording facility Valve Studios, Horsfall has re-emerged with a brand new ‘Rustic Rock n Roll’ outfit ‘Des Horsfall’s Kuschty Rye’  and a critically acclaimed (Ronnie Lane inspired) album ‘The Good Gentleman’s Tonic’ - the first in a trilogy mirroring Lane’s Slim Chance releases. http://www.kuschtyrye.net

Using #iPod As A Teaching & Learning Enhancement #uwsltas #lovehe #ukedchat

For the past 8 weeks I have been using 4 8gb iPod touches as a teaching aid in our BA (Hons) Contemporary Screen Acting  Programme at the University Of The West Of Scotland. The Programme has only been running for a year at UWS Ayr, and so this year's intake are only the second ever cohort, and the rfirst to use the iPods.

Specifically we have used the iPods as cameras and editing tools for our Commercial Screen Project 1 module. "CSP1" is a level 9 Module where Direct Entry students create a piece of Web Deliverable Screen Acting for a notional commercial client's Website. They then create a notional website on Posterous, and launch an online publicity campaign using social media such as Twitter and Facebook.
In the Commercial Screen Project 2, delivered next year, the students go on to create a real web "mini-drama" for a real client.
When I taught this module for the first time  last year, I used the UWS standard kit : Sony Z-1 cameras and Final Cut Pro to record, edit, and disseminate the student's work.
It required a total 10 teaching weeks before the students were able to demonstrate learning at a  rudimentary by going trhough the following stages.

Improvise, write and script their ideas.

Set up  camera and tripod.

Record their images.

Upload the DV Tapes to iMacs.
Digitise the individual shots.
Import to Final Cut Pro.
Edit & dub.
Export to MPG4 files.
Upload to Youtube.
Generate a URL.
Disseminate through Twitter & Facebook through their posterous blog.

All in all the acting students were spending more time worrying about whether they were exporting in the correct codex or whether the camera was set to internal or external XLR mike than doing what they had come to university to study...Acting on the Screen.
I decided to apply for some Strategic Development Funding to see if I could bypass all the extraneous technical aspects of this process by buying a few iPod touches. I then planned to phase in their use gradually  in order to discover if they could enhance the learning experience of the students and expedite this long drawn out process.
The results, after only 8 weeks , have been astonishing. Gradual implementation of use? Forget it.
In the time it took last years intake to create one acting scenario and get it  online, this years students have created, acted, recorded,  uploaded, edited  and disseminated at least 6 different Screen Acting excercises. It has got to the point that I am running out of screen acting workshops for them and have to continually develop deeper and more focussed formative assessments .
In one day the students were able to create a higher standard of work than last years intake managed in 5 weeks. (I don't want to show the students formative assessments, you will have to take me at my word. The final summative assessments WILL be published in December and you can be the judge then. )
Entire short two minute films ilms have been created in less than 24 hours from inception to publication, by a group of students who had never previously used a camera, edited or used online posting.
You can take it from me that I am absoloutley delighted at the electrifying effect this has had on my teaching practice. The feedback from the students has been universally positive also. Here are a selection of the comments I got from them in an anonymous survey in week 7 Out of a total of 15 respondents , the following responses were found.

Pros
Big fan of the iPods Very portable. (5)
Brilliant for quick group projects. (8)
Small easy to use. (12)
Excellent picture quality (15)
Instant upload to youtube (10)
Edit on iMovie on iPod& Macs (12)
Take pictures, perfect for beginners(3)
Easy to learn on. (12)

Individual Comments
"When started I was a technophobe and now I have the confidence to experiment with footage."
"Very discreet. You can film and no one knows you are doing it. We were able to record all over the place "
"If you have a spare £200 buy one and get one for me too please. "
"Much better than using the Z-1 Sony to set up shots. "

I enjoyed it so much I am buying my own iPhone to film on.

Cons
Camera Shake/Need tripods. (2)
Easily lost. (1)
Poor sound. (12)
Not enough of them. We want one each! (10 )

You can see that the tudent response has been overwhelmingly positive. At the moment I am experimenting with recording sound using digital recorders and post-production dubbing and ADR, but in a way this is a bit of a distraction, The sound is the sound . As one of the students told me "You just have to be careful where you use it "
Of course one can buy an upgraded mike which plugs into the jack socket, and even get zoom lenses now but my hunch is that for these direct entry student's first experience of filming, to keep it simple is the best policy.

As I write this the students are preparing their final summatively assessed piece of film work. Because of the vastly improved amount of time which they have to actually CREATE, rather than worrying about whether the digitiser will freeze up, the actual work itself has been far more rewarding at almost every level. My students and I want to give the thumbs up to the iPod Touch.
Can Apple supply me with some more please?

Pitching Sessions For Creative Artists at The CCA

CALLING ALL FILMMAKERS/PERFORMERS/WRITERS/DIRECTORS.

The Pitch

On February the 28th, 2012, Cheeky Breakfast Productions will be hosting an exciting and experimental event at the CCA.
The experiment will take the form of a multi performance and arts event, where many performers, writers, filmmakers and musicians all showcase their work based on one stimulus, provided by Cheeky Breakfast Productions.

We are accepting proposals of any medium, genre or style. If you have an idea for a 0-20min play, film, performance, event, monologue or happening, we want to make it happen.

Simply type a short proposal on no more than one side of A4 with the following details:

• Your/company name.
• Your proposed work.
• How is relates to the stimulus
• The approximate length of the work.
• A rough idea of previous experience.
• Your technical requirements

Because the Economic crisis deepens further, fossil fuels continue to run out, the ice caps continue to melt, and the Mayan calendar runs out in the coming year, the stimulus for this first experiment will be, ‘The End of the World’.

Participants can be as literal or as broad with the stimulus as they desire. Artistic licence is encouraged. Although there is an upper limit of 20 minutes, there is no lower limit time-wise.

Send this to alldaycheeky@gmail.combefore Christmas Day, that’s the 25th OF DECEMBER 2011. Please name the subject of the proposal, ‘The Pitch Proposal’.

This is a great opportunity for student, new, or emerging artists to have work seen in one of the most important art institutes in Glasgow and Scotland.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Cheeky Breakfast Productions.
